Friend is turned against friend—and sometimes father against son—as the nation turns against itself in Class of '61, the made-for-television movie from Amblin Entertainment and MCA TV International that aired on the ABC Network in April of 1993.

Faced by the threat of Civil War, the wrenching, intimate nature of fratricidal strife is epitomized by three senior cadets attending West Point, Class of 1861: best friends Shelby Wade Peyton (Dan Futterman) of the Old South, whose own ambivalence toward slavery and The Cause pales before the unshakable devotion to honor that compels him to resign from the military academy and take up a commission in the Confederate Army; Devin O'Neil (Clive Owen), son of Irish immigrants whose devotion to the Union is mitigated by his younger brother's passion for the South, and his own sister's love for Peyton; and George Armstrong Custer (Josh Lucas), the Michigan Wolverine whose love of glory will carry him from the bottom of his class to the heights of military fame.
