Elliott

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Release Date: June 11, 1982

Directed by Steven Spielberg, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is the thrilling, deeply moving story of the special friendship that develops between Elliott, a lonely young boy living in a suburban California community, and a wise, benevolent visitor from another planet who becomes stranded on Earth. As Elliott attempts to help his extra-terrestrial friend contact his home planet so that he might be rescued, they must elude scientists and government agents determined to apprehend the alien for their own purposes...which results in an adventure greater than anything either of them could have imagined. The film co-stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and, at the tender age of six, Drew Barrymore.

Spielberg’s behind-the-scenes team for the movie included production supervisor Frank Marshall, director of photography Allen Daviau, production designer James D. Bissell, costume supervisor Deborah L. Scott, film editor Carol Littleton, composer John Williams, Industrial Light & Magic visual effects supervisor Dennis Muren, and E.T. designer Carlo Rambaldi.

Upon release in the summer of 1982, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial seemed to have a life of its own, transcending even the high expectations of audiences anxiously awaiting its arrival, delighting millions with a story at once singular and timeless, with the power of a fable and the soul of a fairy tale. From the wordless, poetic and suspenseful introductory sequence to an exhilarating, poignant finale, it was to become an indelible part not only of film history, but of this nation’s cultural fabric.
