The adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown though the time-space continuum continued in cartoon form in the Back to the Future animated series that ran on CBS for two seasons between 1991-1992. Marty and Doc are joined by other characters from the hit Amblin Entertainment film series including Doc's family—his wife Clara, their sons Jules and Verne, and trusty dog Einstein—and the redoubtable Biff Tannen. Each episode of the series kicked off with a live-action segment featuring Christopher Lloyd as Doc, bumbling about his lab with new experiments which would invariably remind him of a story from the gang's past, at which point the show would turn to an animated version of Doc's memories.

The voice cast for the animated series included original Back to the Future film cast members Mary Steenburgen as Clara and Tom Wilson as Biff, joined by Dan Castellaneta (The Simpson's Homer Simpson) as Doc Brown, David Kaufman as Marty, John Weiner as Jules, Troy Davidson as Verne, and Danny Mann voicing Einstein.

Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale served on the animated series as executive producer for Amblin Television and Universal Cartoon Studios. The series animation producer was Jeffrey Kahan.
