In Hereafter, three strangers from across the globe are haunted by mortality in different ways. George Lonegan (Matt Damon, Saving Private Ryan) is a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie Lelay (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (played by Frankie and George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each is on a path in search of the truth. Their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe must exist in the hereafter.

Screen legend and filmmaker Clint Eastwood directed this introspective drama about life and what might lie beyond the veil from a script by Peter Morgan. Morgan wrote the screenplay for Hereafter shortly after having lost a dear friend in an accident. It forced him to mull the question everyone considers at some point in their lives.

Years after completing the script and putting it in a drawer, Morgan found himself discussing the story with producer Kathleen Kennedy while both were in the midst of other projects. Kennedy brought it to the attention of former Amblin Entertainment co-founders and longtime collaborators Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg (both executive producers on Hereafter). Spielberg, having worked with Clint Eastwood on his tender Amazing Stories episode Vanessa in the Garden [S1, Ep.12], and the love story The Bridges of Madison County knew his collaborator and friend would spark to Morgan's story. While perhaps best known for his western and action films as an actor, Eastwood the filmmaker brought Hereafter to the screen with an unsurprising sensitivity and contemplative touch, both in his direction and in the score he composed for the film.
