We’re Back A Dinosaur’s Story

Release Date: November 24, 1993

Every child has a special wish: more than anything, Louie and Cecilia want to make friends. Then, one day, four friendly visitors suddenly arrive in New York City to take Louie and Cecilia on the adventure of their lives. It wasn't quite what they expected-but who could pass up the chance to make pals with a group of lovable, intelligent dinosaurs?

We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story begins in the present and then flashes back to the beginning-right at the beginning, as dinosaurs roam the prehistoric swamps looking for a snack. The kindly, Captain NewEyes (voiced by famous news anchor Walter Cronkite) arrives in his time-traveling airship to feed them his own special Brain Grain Cereal. The high-tech breakfast dramatically raises the IQs of Rex (a gentle tyrannosaur voiced by John Goodman), Elsa (a flying pterodactyl), Dweeb (a duck-billed hadrosaurus voiced by Roger Rabbit himself, Charles Fleischer) and Woog (a good-natured triceratops with a newfound appetite for hot dogs).

Now that the four dinosaurs can choose for themselves, Captain NewEyes offers them a chance to follow him to the future, where millions of human children are waiting to meet them. One boy in particular—Louie, a New York street kid-wants more than anything to have friends of his own. Rex and the others sign aboard whole-heartedly. With so many young dinosaur fans counting on them, how can they resist?

Their adventures get off to a rousing start as the dinosaurs join an exciting Thanksgiving Day parade, stomping and singing to the elation of thousands of happy children. Along the way, they are joined by Cecilia, a well-mannered but lonely little girl who's eager to discover the world beyond her family's posh Manhattan apartment. But there are other interested parties as well: Professor ScrewEyes, the Captain's crafty brother, decides he wants these oversized animals to be the star attractions in his Eccentric Circus—and he's not about to take "no" for an answer.

Can Louie and Cecilia rescue their friends? This then becomes an exciting quest as the children gain the courage to overcome their fears, finally learning that best friends are indeed forever.

We're Back, Amblimation's second animated feature (following An American Tail Fievel Goes West) came out the same year as Steven Spielberg's massive hit Jurassic Park, giving younger dinosaur fans their own adventure that wasn't quite as scary, yet still thrilling and just the right amount of exciting. The film was followed by Balto, Amblimation's final feature before the founding of DreamWorks SKG and its animation group.
