The Haunting of Hill House

Inspired by the classic Shirley Jackson novel, Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House, a 10-episode limited series for Netflix, takes the titular evil house and themes from the novel and makes of them something entirely its own. While the original Jackson novel concerns a team of researchers visiting Hill House to find proof of supernatural activity, the TV series tells the story of the Crain family, as Hugh Crain (played by E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial’s Henry Thomas, and Timothy Hutton), his wife (Carla Guigino), and their five children move into the allegedly haunted Hill House to restore and “flip” (resell) the stately manor. What begins as a summer’s stay at the residence winds up altering the lives and even the afterlives of the Crains.

Flanagan, his co-writers, and a stellar ensemble cast bring a depth of character, emotion and audience engagement to the proceedings, recreating the granddaddy of all ghost and haunted house stories as a terrifying, but also very personal family saga about the ghosts that haunt us all.
