Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Release Date: May 24, 1989

The great adventurer returned to the silver screen five years after Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom with the hotly anticipated Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, directed by Steven Spielberg. Not only did audiences have new exploits with Indy to look forward to that summer, but also the very welcome addition of Indiana’s father, Dr. Henry Jones, played by screen legend Sean Connery. In the film, Indy, his father, and friends Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) and Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), embark on a quest to obtain the Holy Grail, the fabled cup from which Christ drank at The Last Supper. Setting Indy off on his mission to recover the artifact is American industrialist Walter Donovan (Julian Glover), who instructs Indy to meet art historian Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody) in Venice to help him unlock the riddle to the Grail’s long-hidden location.

Being an Indiana Jones adventure, nothing goes quite as planned, and Indy’s path is beset by double-crosses, treacherous tricksters and deadly traps, religious cults, and a return from Raiders of the Lost Ark of those damned stooges of the Third Reich (“I hate these guys!”) Along the way to discovering the Grail, Indy rediscovers one of the most important things his life had desperately needed, something he himself had lost as a boy (who we get to know through a charming opening adventure with young Indy, played to perfection by the late River Phoenix).

Last Crusade closed out the 1980s and three Indiana Jones films that were exemplars of action-adventure cinema at its finest during the era. As luck would have it, however, you just can’t keep a good Jones down, as audiences would find out catching up with Indy nearly two decades later…
